Grants.gov

Grants.gov is the most comprehensive database of federal grants available and should be your first stop when searching for government-funded opportunities for both non-profit and for-profit businesses. Managed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Grants.gov offers a user-friendly platform to search for, apply to, and manage federal grants.

With over 1,000 grant programs provided by more than 26 federal grant-making agencies, Grants.gov has something to offer every business owner. You can search by agency, category, or keyword to find relevant grants that suit your business model or industry.  Additionally, you can set up email notifications based on your preferences to receive updates on new grant opportunities that match your criteria.

Non-profit organizations can find various funding opportunities in education, healthcare, housing, community development, etc. Similarly, for-profit businesses can access grants in sectors like research and development, technology commercialization, job creation, or workforce training.

Small Business Administration (SBA) Funding and Grant Opportunities

The Small Business Administration (SBA) is an essential resource for small businesses seeking funding opportunities. They provide information on federal and state grants and other financing options like loans and venture capital investments. The SBA offers various grant programs targeting specific industries, business stages, or demographics, such as women-owned or veteran-owned enterprises.

State and Local Websites

State and local websites are excellent resources to discover grant opportunities specific to your region. These grants may cater to businesses in particular industries, those that support community development, or companies that create jobs in economically disadvantaged areas. For businesses based in Texas, various state and local websites provide valuable information on funding sources tailored to the Lone Star State.

Here are some useful links for Texas-based businesses seeking grant opportunities:

  • Texas Economic Development Corporation (TxEDC): TxEDC is a one-stop resource for information on business incentives, financial assistance programs, industry-specific resources, and workforce development initiatives within the state. • Governor’s Office of Small Business Assistance: This office provides support and resources for small businesses in Texas. They offer information on financing options, including grants and loans, and access to business development services such as counseling and training programs. Visit their website at https://gov.texas.gov/business/page/small-business-resources for more information.
    • The Beacon State Fund,* in partnership with the Governor’s Commission for Women, will host a pitch competition and select two awardees in 2023. Sempra’s support of the Beacon State Fund makes the women-owned small business pitch competition possible.  (https://gov.texas.gov/organization/women/pitch-competition)
  • State Grants Team: The State Grants Team guides applying for state-administered federal grants through the eGrants system used by many state agencies in Texas. Their website offers tips on navigating eGrants and a list of current funding opportunities available through this platform: https://egrants.gov.texas.gov/fundopp.aspx.

In conclusion, leveraging platforms such as Grants.gov, tapping into SBA funding resources, and exploring state-specific websites—like those in Texas—along with engaging in local networking through organizations like chambers of commerce or SCORE chapters, will equip you with a robust framework to navigate the competitive realm of small business grants.

While resources like Grants.gov and state grants unfold a bounty of funding avenues for businesses and non-profit entities, it’s pivotal to note that these platforms often tailor their offerings to specific industries, services, or communities. Hence, conducting a meticulous examination of the eligibility criteria for each grant opportunity is imperative to ensure a harmonious alignment with your organization’s mission, objectives, and target demographics.
